Choosing The Right Leash, Collar, or Harness For Your Dog

In many situations, a dog collar is your pet’s door to the outside world. A dog collar, leash, or harness is typically necessary for your dog to leave your home to get the exercise and physical activity they need. Most dogs also wear a collar at all times in order to always have proper identification; if they are lost, they will be safely returned home. As a dog owner, dog collars, harnesses and leashes are among the most important purchases in regards to the dog’s safety and well being.

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a color, leash, or harness. First and foremost, you want a collar that fits the dog appropriately. You should be able to slide two fingers between the collar and the dog’s neck easily, without being able to slide the collar over the dog’s head. A dog’s collar needs to be monitored regularly to ensure that the fit is not too tight. For a growing puppy, it can be useful to choose a dog collar that is adjustable. Nylon collars, leashes and harnesses are very durable and typically adjustable. If your dog is going to be left unattended for long periods of time, you should choose a collar that has a break away feature. If the dog’s collar becomes entangled, the collar will break free and prevent serious injury to the dog.

Another factor to take into consideration is the intended use of the collars, harnesses, or leashes. These items are available in many different designs that could be of great benefit. If your dog is going to be used for hunting purposes, camouflage leashes are available. A harness can be used if you would like to have a better control over your dog. If your dog has a tendency to jump or lunge, a shorter leash with a no-slip gripped handle would be an excellent choice to keep your dog securely in your control. Leashes, collars, and harnesses are available in various lengths and widths for any size or breed. However, they do need to be replaced and upgraded as your dog grows.

It is important for you dog’s safety and happiness to have an appropriate and comfortable collar or harness. Dogs need the right equipment in order to spend time safely walking and running outdoors, a past time that keeps them healthy and happy. Most areas require that your dog have an acceptable collar and leash when in a public space.
