Granted, Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're a Dog may be the longest book title we have ever seen. According to author Darlene Arden, it doesn't even have an official short-form. "The title wasn't mine - it came from the publisher. They have an entire series of books called Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures," she said, in a recent interview. "My editor calls it UGD. I can't think of another so I end up saying the entire title."
Darlene's book is quite different from others in the UGD series, because it revolves exclusively around dogs. Published in June of 2004, it's all about what you can buy for your dog, what you can do with your dog and where you can go with your dog. From great deals to travel adventures, this book is overflowing with useful tips and advice. What's more, the 256 page book is clear, concise and a pleasure to read. And since it was just published, the information is current and definitely timely.
Over the past few years, "everything dog" has become extremely popular. From doggie decor and furniture to dog clothing, carriers and cookies, canines have become a very important part of our lives and our families. "I think we're a more mobile society and the baby boomers are now empty-nesters and dogs often help fill that empty nest," said Darlene. "Dogs are great go-everywhere companions. They have become family members as well as friends."
Darlene was inspired to write the book, she told us, by the incredible bond that humans and dogs share. This is evident in the sections on shopping and travel, two things that Darlene loves to do with her furry friends. "I've always enjoyed traveling with a four-legged companion," she told us. "Shopping and sightseeing are always more fun for me when there are dogs involved in some manner."
Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're a Dog is divided into 8 sections: Shopping (Shop 'Til You Drop), Health and Grooming, Food and Treats (Feed Me!), Books and Magazines (Read All About It), Travel, Art and Photographs, Training and Day Care and one catch-all section called "Off-Beat", which highlights the more unusual doggie-related tourist attractions worldwide, gives the scoop on making your little prince or princess famous on radio or tv and provides details on doggie fund-raising events. Each product, service or business listing includes the name of the company, a brief but complete description and full contact details. Here's a sample from "Feed Me!":
Howling Hound Bakery
This delicious bakery boasts that their treats are low fat, organic, and "delicious". The business started because the owner's first dog, a pound puppy, had allergies. Meatless dog treats were hard to find, so she created her own using vegetarian recipes. Not only did that dog love them but so did the second shelter dog acquired by the family. Their treats contain no meat products or preservatives, and they come in mouthwatering names such as Peanut Butter Bones, Cheese Biscuits, Oatmeal Apples, Salsa Stars, Pizza Slices, Nutty Bananas, Very Berries, and Brownie Hearts (made with carob, not chocolate, of course.) The bakery owner admits to eating the goodies herself, since they're made with human grade ingredients. Gift packs are also available, as are gift certificates. She also wholesales to stores around the United States. For information: howlinghound.com; email: firstname.lastname@example.org; telephone (toll-free): 888-323-HOWL; Howling Hound Bakery, P.O. What was most interesting to us about Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're a Dog is that it's not limited to just travel and shopping, as are most activity-based guides for those of us with furkids. "Most guides tell you which hotels will take dogs, or which trails you can hike on with your dog, " said Darlene. "[My book] covers a wide range of things from shopping and travel (and how to fly a dog on a plane) to how to choose a dog park, canine activities with and without your dog, places to find everything from aromatherapy, doggie daycare, doggie bakeries, the Dog Collar Museum, and the Dog Chapel, to places that sell dog books and videos. [We list] dog artists and photographers, and so much more."
Each chapter also includes great advice to follow whenever you're including your furkid in your activities. For example, there are complete instructions on creating a doggie first-aid kit before you travel with your pooch. Here's a sample:
Start with a box that has compartments so you can find things easily when you need them in a hurry. A fishing tackle box is a good choice and reasonably priced. Make a trip to your local drugstore and gather an assortment of items you'll need just in case. Remember to have gauze pads and gauze tape, cotton balls and roll cotton. Add a bottle of hydrogen peroxide... (from page 91)
"The most rewarding part was discovering how many people have created businesses around dogs, cater to dogs and find new ways to enjoy dogs," said Darlene. "I thought I knew what was out there but I was astonished at the variety of things I found that were dog-related. For example, I found a place where you can have your dog's paw prints bronzed, and I found a website where you can pretend to be a Border Collie herding sheep into a pen."
Anyone who has a pooch of their own and is interested in learning about the myriad products and services available would love this book. Because of the easy organization, it doesn't need to be read from cover to cover - but can be, since the information it relates is so much fun! Love to travel and shop and cannot stand to leave the little furbaby at home? Have a dog shopaholic in your life? This informative and often hilarious book makes the perfect gift for you or a friend.
